The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has launched its new web series called 82nd and 5th. Every week, two videos will be released exploring the different artworks in the museum.
The two-minute videos will feature one art work, accompanied by an interactive feature that allows visitors to explore the art in more detail. Each piece will be presented by one curator. 11 museum photographers will also transform the curators’ audio commentaries into moving visuals.
The project will run from January 31 – December 25, 2013. By the end of this year, there will be a total of 100 short videos.
Why I’m Curious
Presented in digestible commentaries, this project not only makes the Met’s collection more accessible to the world, it explores the multi-dimensional aspects of the works.
There’s an opportunity here to provide timely references to the works, inspired by current events, as this project encourages users to experience the history behind art. I wonder if the creators of this project considered adding a mobile/AR component. As a marketing campaign I’m interested to see how the Met continues to promote this project.
