Amazon announced a new virtual currency for purchasing games, app and in-app items for the Kindle Fire. Appropriately named ‘Amazon Coins’ will be an easy way for customer to spend money in the Appstore.
Launching in May in the U.S., Amazon Coins will be quick and easy to buy using customers’ Amazon accounts, and the company will give away tens of millions of dollars’ worth of coins for them to get started. The coins will be geared towards developers to help increase downloads and ultimately monetization.
Developers will continue to earn their standard 70% revenue share when customers make purchases.
Why I’m Curious
Virtual and social currency are a huge trend right now, from tweeting for goods to Facebook introducing cards and even virtual wallets. I’m curious how the Amazon Coins will continue to grow into the ability to buy more than apps and potentially into physical goods.
