Can’t get enough of the Olympics? Thanks to EDF Energy, Ignite and MIT graduates London will now have the first ever social-media driven, “low carbon” light show. “Energy of the Nation,” visualizes the UK’s mood around the Olympics by analyzing positive or negative ‘energy’ from Twitter conversation. The total ratio of positive to negative energy is expressed as a pie chart embodied in the circular shape of the London Eye: yellow lights represent positive energy, purple light negative. Interactivity is highly encouraged with Mission Control visitor center at the Eye itself, as well as a web platform, mobile app, and Facebook page.
Why I’m Curious: Real time dialogue is always more interesting when it’s displayed visually…and add lights on top of that and you can’t lose. London has truly showcased itself as a digitally-literate and enabled city and other cities could think about what other data would be relevant to display in local landmarks (from traffic conditions to weather).
